Our Program

The Neuro-Oncology Program at Keck Medical Center of USC in Los Angeles and the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center has an internationally recognized team of expert clinicians and renowned researchers who are focused on fighting cancer. The team at the Neuro-Oncology Program provides exemplary patient care and develops novel therapies in a multidisciplinary fashion. Brain and spinal tumors come in a great variety of types, each requiring a different approach to treatment that may require medical, surgical or radiation-based intervention. As a result, an effective neuro-oncology program requires close collaboration and expertise in all of these therapeutic modalities. This expertise is available at the Neuro-Oncology Program at Keck Medicine of USC.

Our Approach

At Keck Medical Center, we treat a variety of brain and spinal tumors, each via a unique and personalized approach. The Neuro-Oncology Program at Keck Medical Center of USC offers a comprehensive approach to caring for patients with brain and spinal tumors, bringing together medical neuro-oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists and neurosurgeons to provide patients with a broad range of treatment options. Such an approach can be of great benefit to patients, not only during the initial diagnosis but at any point during treatment. Our patients benefit from having physicians that collaborate as a team, which introduces best-practice medical decisions and streamlines patient care.

Some of our advancements at Keck Medicine of USC include:

  • We are one of the few academic medical centers to have interventional neuro-radiologists as part of the neuro-oncology team. These physicians specialize in the embolization of tumors. The lesions are treated and are then more amenable to surgical and radiation-based therapies.
  • We use advanced neuro-navigational technology and frameless stereotactic devices (which provide a three-dimensional view of the nervous system) to more accurately localize brain tumors. This system helps to reduce incision size and the length of hospital stays.
  • We use sophisticated and sensitive imaging technology, such as positron emission tomography (PET) and, for some tumors, magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy and MR perfusion to assess the metabolic status and vascularity of the tumor. This information helps differentiate between tumor recurrence and tissue necrosis. Additionally, we use functional MR imaging in tumors involving eloquent areas of brain to better plan surgery.

Our Team

The Neuro-Oncology Program includes the divisions of cerebrovascular surgery (stroke, cerebral aneurysm, AVM), stereotactic radiosurgery (Gamma Knife®), movement disorders, endovascular neurosurgery, skull base surgery, neuro-endocrine surgery (pituitary tumors), complex spine surgery (spinal surgery), peripheral nerve surgery, neuro-trauma and pediatric neurosurgery. The Department of Neurological Surgery is one of the few departments in the country in which endovascular neurosurgery and cerebrovascular neurosurgery are housed in the same department, which offers the best options to patients with cerebrovascular disease.
